WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING

Adina Rosenberg, MCAT, BC-DMT, LPC

"I have known Tara for 20 years – we worked together at Family Service Association of Bucks County. When choosing a therapist, experience makes a tremendous difference. She has seen people facing struggles many times and has a clear sense of what to expect and what works. She is a gifted clinician who brings energy and enthusiasm to sessions. Research confirms that the largest predictor of a positive outcome in psychotherapy is the quality of the relationship between the therapist and client. Tara connects easily with her clients – they feel valued, understood, accepted and heard. She is well-versed in a range of approaches, meeting clients where they are at. As an art therapist she helps her clients by using forms of expressive therapy that engage the mind, body and spirit in ways that are distinct from verbal articulation alone – for those that have not experienced relief from therapy before, I would highly recommend art therapy. Children, their families and adults definitely benefit from her skills and expertise and I would highly recommend working with her. "

Elizabeth from Pennsylvania

"Tara has been working with our foster daughter for over two years. Our daughter came to us at the age of seven having dealt with many things a little girl should not have to deal with including separation from her parents due to their substance abuse, the incarceration of her parents, the death of a sibling, a house fire, and more. Tara has been able to help her express her feelings and not have to lie or act out to survive or get attention. She has also helped our daughter to realize she does not have to try and be overly friendly with strangers in order to survive as well."

Dayna from Pennsylvania

"Tara has been working with my son for 5 years now. He is almost 10 years old and has made so much progress since he started seeing her! When we started with Tara, my son had impulse control and anger issues. Tara has helped him with calming exercises and has helped teach me different techniques to redirect and focus him. We have participated in family and individual therapy as well as providing group therapy for my son with other children his age. When Tara left the practice she was working in to start her own private practice we followed her because my son had responded so well to her therapy practices. We could not imagine starting over with a new therapist. Tara cares not only about my son but about my whole family. I would recommend her to anyone!"

Mother of 11 yr old boy

The Kid’s Yoga club is fantastic! My son, a “cool,” Nike-sock wearing 11 yr old who loves sports, was initially hesitant about joining; but after experiencing it first hand, he now welcomes it! He sees the benefits of stretching underused muscles and really likes how Tara incorporates fun and effective breathing exercises into the calm class.

Mother of 8 yr old son who attends 2 classes/ week

My 8 yr old son appreciates the relatable-names of the postures/ movements that Tara uses, like the “washing machine” and “dryer.” Aside from promoting physical fitness, Tara artfully sprinkles in opportunities for some self-expression (“what is something that you are looking forward to today/ in next few days?”). Tara’s blend of guided imagery and her encouragement of the child’s creative mind (“choose a color and let it gently wash all over you”) during the calming, quiet cool-down are a bonus. In this high-tech time with crammed-in activities and limited space for introspection and reflection, how wonderful it is to expose our children to the ancient, nurturing practice of yoga! How promising it is to help them cultivate a positive sense of self-care that they can then apply both in the present day, and, hopefully, well into their future!

What Is Art Therapy?

Art therapy is a mental health profession in which clients, facilitated by the art therapist, use art media, the creative process, and the resulting artwork to explore their feelings, reconcile emotional conflicts, foster self-awareness, manage behavior and addictions, develop social skills, improve reality orientation, reduce anxiety, and increase self-esteem. A goal in art therapy is to improve or restore a client’s functioning and his or her sense of personal well-being. Art Therapist require knowledge of visual arts (drawing, painting, sculpture, and other art forms) and the creative process, as well as of human development, psychology, and counseling theories and techniques.

PLAY THERAPY

Play therapy is a psychotherapeutic approach designed to help children between the ages of 3 and 12 express repressed thoughts and explore emotions freely through the process of play. The goal is to help a child learn to express themselves in healthy ways, become
more respectful and empathic and discover positive ways to solve problems. This approach can help children with social or emotional deficits communicate better, change behaviors, and relate to others in a positive way. Play therapy can be an effective treatment for children who are dealing with a traumatic event, upsetting life changes, behavioral disorders, anxiety, depression, grief, anger issues, attention deficit disorders or those on the autism spectrum.

TALK THERAPY

Mental disorders such as depression, anxiety and stress have serious symptoms that, if left untreated, can lead to long term consequences. An effective and non invasive treatment for psychological issues is psychotherapy. Psychotherapy, also known as talk therapy, aims to lessen the effects of symptoms experienced by clients through talk therapy sessions where they can freely express their thoughts, feelings, and experiences in a safe and productive  atmosphere. When you participate in talk therapy you not only address issues that are happening in realtime, you also develop behavioral skills that will help in future situations.

YOGA & MINDFULLNESS

Yoga means union or connection. Yoga is both a state of connection and a body of techniques that allow us to connect to anything. When we are consciously connected to something, we are able to feel and experience the thing, person or experience. Yoga has been found to decrease stress level, relieve anxieties, improve heart health, reduce inflammation, improve overall quality of your life, reduce chronic pain, lower depression, promote sleep, improve breathing, improve balance and flexibility, promote healthy eating habits, relieve migraines, as well as increase your strength.

Mindfulness is the practice of self-regulating one's attention with an attitude of curiosity, openness, and acceptance. When you are practicing mindfulness, you are able to take control of your attention and regulate your focus. When this happens we allow ourselves to be open and curious without judgement of what we choose to attend to. Some benefits of mindfulness are stress reduction, reduced rumination, ability to focus, improved working memory, more cognitive flexibility, less emotional reactivity, relationship satisfaction, enhanced self-insight and several health benefits including increased immune function.

CIRCLE OF FRIENDS

Does your child struggle with making friends and keeping friends? Does this affect your child’s self-esteem? Does your child have increased anxiety due to these struggles? If your answer is YES then this is the group for your child. The group meets weekly to explore and develop new coping skills, social skills, and behaviors to aid in the emotional and social development of your child. Currently two groups are being offered for children age 5-8 and ages 9-12.

Children
& Teens

ADD is a common condition that affects children, teens and adults. Some symptoms of this disorder are difficulty paying attention, struggles with following directions, sequencing issues, being easily distractible, disorganization, impulsivity, and for some, hyperactivity. In children these symptoms can affect their school performance, ability to form friendships and socialize appropriately. These children may also struggle with behaviors at home and in school. At Blue Sky Therapy Center we focus on building a child’s strengths, helping them learn and practice new social skills, and identifying ways to provide structure for your child to succeed in all aspects of life.

A child with Asperger’s syndrome often has above average intelligence, though fairly impaired social skills. These children can engage in repetitive activities or hyper focus on specific, limited areas of interest. These behaviors, along with their inability to read and respond to social cues, often set them apart from their classmates and peers. At Blue Sky Therapy Center we offer socialization groups to help children with Aspergers Syndrome create a larger repertoire of socialization skills. Within the group dynamic these children are provided a safe place to practice using new social cues and develop healthy reciprocal friendships. When indicated, family therapy is provided to aid in overall management of any troubling behaviors as well as improving family relationships.

This is a condition that affects a child’s ability to form social relationships, communicate with others, and manage repetitive behavior patterns. At Blue Sky Therapy Center, we provide services to the child with mild forms of autism. Offering social skills groups to this child will afford an opportunity to have a positive peer interaction, potentially form a connection with another peer, and learn as well as practice appropriate social cues.

Children and teens that suffer from anxiety often experience shyness, nervousness and fear. These children tend to avoid participating in activities or attending certain events. Research shows that young people who have untreated anxiety disorders are at a higher risk of substance abuse. They miss out on important social experiences and often perform poorly in school. At Blue Sky Therapy Center, we approach these young people in a holistic fashion by helping them develop the tools they need to manage their anxiety and work toward becoming a healthy, well-adjusted adult. We incorporate art therapy, talk therapy, sand tray therapy techniques, yoga & breathing practices, journal writing, psycho-education and other therapeutic interventions to give your child more components for their emotional toolbox.

When a child or a teen has a depressive disorder, their sadness is not fleeting. It is persistent and at times may disrupt their behaviors. This, in turn, will impact their school functions, peer relationships, social activities and family life. There are many symptoms of childhood depression. A young person with depression may appear to function reasonably well in structured environments, which can make identifying depression difficult at times. Some who have significant depression will have changes in their social activities, loss of interest or decreased performance in school or a change in their physical appearance. Drug and alcohol use increases for some young people suffering from depression. At Blue Sky Therapy Center we approach treating young people with depression holistically, incorporating several therapeutic interventions, including Yoga & mindfulness practice, breathing techniques, art therapy, talk therapy, sand tray techniques, journal writing, and psycho-education around their illness. It is our goal to help your child gain knowledge and the skills they need to manage their depressive symptoms and re-integrate in the social, academic, and family life around them.

The oppositional child often displays a pattern of hostile, uncooperative, and defiant behavior toward authority figures. At Blue Sky Therapy Center, we provide support and structure to both the young person and the parents. We also provide individual therapy for the child to help build a better repertoire of managing their anger. This is accomplished through the proven benefit of Art therapy interventions, breath-work, talk therapy, and role playing techniques.

Parenting issues are any struggles or difficulties that you are faced with in raising your child/children. These issues may include schooling, discipline, chores, daily routines, work- family balance, activities-family balance. It can also include finances, sibling conflicts, spousal conflict, and parent-child conflicts. At Blue Sky Therapy Center we believe in helping the entire family create a workable structure that serves the family unit. We provide family therapy to help develop a plan to have a more cohesive, conflict-free, successful household.

These are skills that some young people struggle to incorporate into their daily life. We, as adults, understand the importance of them, and how they affect our well being as a whole. These are a part of our executive functioning skills, which help to plan, organize, pay attention, and start & complete tasks. If you have a child who frequently has trouble starting tasks, completing them, procrastinates, loses track of time, often misplaces things, we believe they could benefit from our services at BSTC. We can assist you and your child with gaining strategies to help them learn to organize their thoughts, maintain their space, and complete certain tasks in a timely manner. These challenges may not be something your child can control on their own and will benefit from the supportive, compassionate structure offered at Blue Sky Therapy Center.

Conflict is common within a family’s day-to-day life. One’s nuclear family is the basis for learning skills to best manage or resolve conflicts. At times, parents can benefit from assistance with modeling healthy conflict resolution. At BSTC, we support parents in the task of helping their children succeed at resolving conflicts and maintaining a peaceful interaction by acknowledging your child’s feelings and assisting them in managing those emotions.

The parent-child relationship is the most important and generally the first major relationship in a child’s life. When a child has a consistent, reliable and stable relationship with their parents, they start out with a strong foundation for exploring and experiencing their world with others they meet along the way. This leads to healthy relationships in adulthood. With the support and compassion offered at Blue Sky Therapy Center you will be able to build a strong, healthy and loving connection as well as improve communication between you and your child.

Bullying is being mean to another child/person over and over again. Typical behaviors of a bully are teasing, threatening to hurt someone, intentionally excluding other children, spreading rumors, attacking someone by yelling at or hitting them. Bullying can also happen on social media sites and through texting. Commonly, it is children who struggle to stand up for themselves who are targeted by bullies. These targeted children can feel powerless, especially toward the bully. Being treated this way can leave a child with feelings of sadness, loneliness, or nervousness. They often feel sick to their stomach and have problems at school.

There are many reasons a child may become a bully towards others. They may be the victim of being bullied and in turn, mimic that behavior toward their peers. Kids who bully may also be trying to “fit in” or feel a sense of superiority over other children. Those who bully use power to hurt people. There is a tendency in these children to also have other mental health issues, which can lead to physical conflicts, drug/alcohol abuse, and being at risk of dropping out of school.

At Blue Sky Therapy Center we offer support to both parents and children who find themselves on either side of this bullying issue. Addressing these behaviors as soon as they arise will help manage the problem before it becomes overwhelming and out of control. Building a child’s self-esteem through art therapy, play therapy, and psycho-educational means will aid in managing this issue.

Family
& Parents

Individuals of
All Ages

Post-traumatic stress disorder, (commonly referred to as PTSD) can occur in a person who has experienced a traumatic event. Often it is an event that is shocking, scary, or dangerous, but it also can be a traumatic event such as the sudden death of a loved one. At BSTC, we offer compassionate and safe treatment modalities, which are tailored to your individual needs. We incorporate talk therapy, art therapy, yoga and breathing techniques, as well as journaling methods as a means to help our clients heal from their trauma. Traumatic events often leave a visual imprint on the brain, which is why expressive therapies are an important component of treatment. They allow the person to work through their experiences in a healthy, safe and healing manner. Incorporating yoga and breathing practices will give you a well-integrated holistic approach to coping with the aftermath of a traumatic event and enable you to put the pieces of your life back together.

When someone suffers with anxiety their days can be filled with fear and apprehensiveness. There are many physical & physiological symptoms that occur such as heart palpitations, irritability, sweating, tension headaches, general muscle tightness and frequent feelings of stress. Please know that you are not alone if you suffer from anxiety. There are 19 million American adults with an anxiety disorder. At BSTC we utilize art therapy, writing techniques, talk therapy and mindfulness practices to those who suffer from anxiety. These methods afford the client the opportunity to grow and understand their patterns with this illness. Once cognizant of their symptoms, clients will be better equipped to incorporate healthy coping skills, live productively and ultimately manage their anxieties.

Even positive life transitions cause a certain level of stress. Life changes are inevitable, and adjusting to them can often prove challenging. Transitions can include career changes, divorce, marriage, birth of a child, change in sexual orientation, school changes (college, high school, or middle school), empty nesters, moving, or care-giving for a sick family member. All these life events come with a challenging adjustment period. At Blue Sky Therapy Center we assist you with navigating these adjustments by offering supportive counseling, stress management techniques and problem solving skills.

Grief is the natural emotional response to loss. With any loss, a person will experience various emotions and support may be needed to guide them through it. Depending on the circumstances, some losses can be more complicated than others, making the healing process more complex. At Blue Sky Therapy Center, we incorporate an array of techniques to help a person identify their feelings, express their grief and learn ways to continue along the path of healing.

Relationships need a bit more TLC than we often think. When someone is struggling in a relationship and is unsure how to proceed, being supported in a non-judgmental and compassionate fashion, can pave the way for the road they need to take.

Separation and divorce is often the healthiest option for a relationship, but the various emotional and practical aspects of it can be quite difficult to navigate. Often it may involve extreme changes for you and your family such as moving, decrease in finances, new schools, loss of friendships, change in social situations and childcare issues. During the transition, your entire world may feel like an impossible jigsaw puzzle. At BSTC, we support people with relationship difficulties by helping them determine the best path towards healing, and creating a safe space to explore options and put the puzzle back together.
